“Gain height by consuming capsules…slimming down with use of powders…getting a perfect figure with cosmetic treatments…” such alluring and misleading advertisements have caught the attention of law enforcement agencies. The central and state authorities are gearing up for stricter and comprehensive policies to regulate such advertisements, which will be put to implementation within next three months.
On Saturday, a national workshop on ‘Protecting Consumers from Misleading Advertisements’ was organized in the city. Organized by Consumer Education and Research Center (CERC), Ahmedabad and Union ministry of consumer affairs, the workshop focused on growing menace of misleading advertisements in the society.
Experts from various fields who attended the workshop emphasized the need to strike balance between voluntary restraint, self-regulations and stricter regulatory provision in order to safeguard the interest of the buyers who often fall prey to unrealistic claims made by the advertisers.
Justice MB Shah, former president, National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, said, “Aggressive marketing strategies and freedom for expression and creativity must not be used in a way that is harmful to society.”
